Founded in 2003 by Dr. Mingmar Gyalzen Sherpa, a compassionate physician and native of Phaplu, the Sherpa Education Foundation began as a humble initiative to address the stark educational disparities in Solukhumbu.
Driven by his belief that "education heals communities," Dr. Sherpa transformed a small learning center into the thriving Phaplu Community Secondary School—now a beacon of hope for hundreds of families.
Over two decades, we've expanded from basic literacy programs to a full-grade curriculum, empowering students to compete nationally and dream globally. What started with just 15 students in a single room has grown into a comprehensive educational institution serving over 250 students from pre-primary to Grade 12.
Our journey has been marked by countless challenges—from limited resources and infrastructure to the remote geography of Solukhumbu. Yet, with unwavering community support and dedicated educators, we've persevered in our mission to provide quality education to every child, regardless of their economic background.
Today, the Sherpa Education Foundation stands as a testament to what's possible when a community comes together with a shared vision. Our graduates have gone on to become healthcare workers, teachers, engineers, and community leaders—many returning to Solukhumbu to contribute to its development.
Dr. Mingmar Gyalzen Sherpa was born in a small village near Phaplu, where educational opportunities were scarce. Through determination and family sacrifice, he was able to pursue medical studies in Kathmandu, becoming one of the first physicians from his region.
After establishing his medical practice, Dr. Sherpa never forgot his roots. He observed that while healthcare was essential, education was the true foundation for sustainable community development. This realization led him to establish the Sherpa Education Foundation in 2003.
"I believe that every child has unlimited potential," says Dr. Sherpa. "Our responsibility is to provide the environment where that potential can flourish. When we educate a child, we don't just change one life—we transform entire families and communities for generations to come."
Today, Dr. Sherpa divides his time between his medical practice in Kathmandu and regular visits to Phaplu, where he continues to guide the foundation's growth and vision.
