School Profile

Phaplu Community Secondary School (Zeke O'Connor Secondary School)

Nestled in the serene Solu Dudhkunda Municipality, our school serves remote villages across Solukhumbu—a region where many families survive on less than $2 a day. Surrounded by the majestic Himalayan foothills, our campus provides a safe and inspiring environment for children to learn and grow.

Founded in 2003 as a small learning center, we have grown into a full-fledged secondary school offering education from pre-primary to Grade 12. Our student body of over 250 children represents diverse ethnic backgrounds, with a particular focus on reaching marginalized communities that have historically had limited access to quality education.

Our school follows the Nepal national curriculum, enhanced with additional programs that emphasize critical thinking, practical skills, and cultural heritage. We maintain a teacher-to-student ratio of 1:25 in lower grades and 1:30 in upper grades, allowing for personalized attention and support.

The school operates six days a week from Sunday to Friday, with classes running from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Our academic year follows the Nepali calendar, with the main session running from April to March.

Our Curriculum

Our educational approach balances academic excellence with practical skills development, preparing students not just for exams but for life's challenges.

Core Focus

Rigorous science and mathematics programs to bridge Nepal's STEM gap. Our curriculum emphasizes foundational concepts while encouraging inquiry-based learning and practical applications. Students engage in regular laboratory sessions and field studies to reinforce classroom learning.

Tech Forward

Soon introducing computer labs and coding workshops to prepare students for digital careers. Our technology initiative aims to provide students with essential digital literacy skills, basic programming knowledge, and an understanding of how technology can address local challenges.

Cultural Pride

Lessons in Sherpa traditions, environmental stewardship, and global citizenship. We integrate local knowledge, language, and cultural practices into our curriculum, helping students maintain strong connections to their heritage while developing a global perspective.

Language Skills

Strong emphasis on Nepali and English language proficiency, with optional Sherpa language classes. Our bilingual approach ensures students can communicate effectively both locally and internationally, opening doors to higher education and career opportunities.

Practical Arts

Vocational training in traditional crafts, sustainable agriculture, and basic entrepreneurship. These practical skills provide students with alternative pathways to livelihood and self-sufficiency, particularly important in our remote region.

Life Skills

Comprehensive health education, financial literacy, and leadership development. We believe these essential skills help students navigate life's challenges and become responsible community members who can make informed decisions about their future.

Student Support

We believe that true education goes beyond academics. Our comprehensive support programs ensure that every child has what they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

Essential Kits

Free textbooks, uniforms, and stationery for all 250 students. Each student receives two sets of uniforms, a complete set of textbooks, notebooks, and basic stationery items at the beginning of each academic year, removing financial barriers to education.

Nutrition Matters

Daily fortified snacks to combat malnutrition and boost concentration. Our nutrition program provides a mid-day meal that includes locally sourced vegetables, proteins, and fortified ingredients to address common nutritional deficiencies in the region.

Beyond the Classroom

Soccer tournaments, cultural festivals, and vocational workshops. Our extracurricular activities program ensures holistic development through sports, arts, and cultural activities that build teamwork, creativity, and confidence.

Health Services

Regular health check-ups, dental care, and vision screening for all students. Our partnership with local healthcare providers ensures that basic health needs are addressed, and preventive care is accessible to all students.

Mentorship Program

One-on-one guidance from teachers and community leaders to support personal growth. Each student is paired with a mentor who provides academic support, career guidance, and personal encouragement throughout their educational journey.

Scholarship Pathways

Support for promising students to pursue higher education in Kathmandu and beyond. We help graduating students navigate college applications, prepare for entrance exams, and connect with scholarship opportunities for continued education.

Infrastructure Needs

Despite our achievements, we face significant infrastructure challenges that limit our ability to provide the best possible education for our students. Your support can help us address these critical needs.

Growing Pains

Our classrooms are overcrowded, with 40+ students per room. We urgently need to construct additional classrooms to reduce class sizes and provide a more conducive learning environment. Current conditions make it difficult for teachers to provide individualized attention.

Lab Shortages

Outdated science equipment limits hands-on learning. Our science laboratories need modern equipment and supplies to provide students with practical experience in physics, chemistry, and biology. Hands-on experimentation is crucial for developing scientific thinking.

Tech Gap

No computers or internet access—critical for modern education. In today's digital world, our students are at a significant disadvantage without access to computers and the internet. We aim to establish a computer lab with reliable internet connectivity powered by solar energy.

Library Expansion

Our small library has limited and outdated resources. We need to expand our collection with current textbooks, reference materials, and literature in both Nepali and English to foster a love of reading and support independent learning.

Sanitation Facilities

Inadequate washrooms, particularly for adolescent girls. We need to construct additional gender-separated washrooms with proper sanitation facilities to ensure hygiene and privacy, which is especially important for keeping adolescent girls in school.

Sustainable Energy

Unreliable electricity hampers learning activities. A solar power system would provide consistent electricity for lighting, educational technology, and basic administrative functions, reducing our dependence on the unreliable local power grid.

Student Success Stories

Mr. Tseten Sherpa (Ex-student)

My school life was quite amazing and exciting. I had spent 7 years (class 6 to 12) in this school. During the school days I was well known among all my school mates because I used to talk a lot like a garrulous person. So I earned a lot of memories from school day 🙂.

The school environment and teachers are student friendly, dedicated for quality education in remote area.

Being a part of this school what I would like to suggest my juniors is you can use this school as good platform for learning.

(Mr. Tseten is currently studying Aviation Pilot Course at Flight Training Services, Midrand Johannesburg, South Africa)

“Growing up in a farming family, I never imagined I would become a medical student. The science education and mentorship I received at Phaplu Community School gave me the foundation and confidence to pursue my dream of becoming a doctor. Now in my third year of medical school in Kathmandu, I plan to return to Solukhumbu to serve my community.”

“As a girl from a traditional family, continuing education beyond primary school seemed impossible. The support and encouragement from my teachers at Phaplu changed my life trajectory. Today, I’m studying computer science and working part-time as a coding instructor for younger students. Education has given me choices my mother never had.”
